Are Exercise Classes More Effective Than Solo Workouts?

Everybody has their own way of working out; some people like to put their headphones on, shut the world out, and push themselves to the limit, while other people prefer working out with friends or in an exercise class. But is it better to work out alone or with other people?

In the end, it all comes down to you and what you prefer, but you should definitely consider group workouts because there are a lot of benefits. However, there are also some situations where working out alone is best. Check out these pros and cons of group workouts to help you decide which is right for you. 

Pros 

Motivation 

Motivation is the biggest benefit of working out with other people. Some days, you get into the gym and you really don’t feel like doing a workout, so you don’t push yourself. But if you’re doing a half-assed workout, you’re not getting anything out of it. But you don’t get that issue when you’re working out in a group. If you book fitness classes at a gym like Fitness 19, you have a big group of people all pushing for the same burn. Having other people around you motivates you to work harder and when you feel yourself slipping, there are other people there to encourage you to keep going. 

Accountability 

If you’re great at coming up with excuses to skip workouts, you should exercise with other people. When you book in for a fitness class or arrange to meet somebody at the gym for a workout, it’s much harder to drop out because somebody else is holding you accountable. So, you should find that you keep up with your routine a lot better. 

Self Confidence 

A lot of people avoid exercise classes because they don’t feel confident about their athletic ability. However, if you can overcome that fear and step into a group workout, you will find that it’s a great way to boost your confidence and achieve fitness success. 

Cons 

Large Class Sizes 

In some cases, large exercise class sizes can be a problem. There is only one instructor and they can’t pay attention to everybody in the class. This means that you don’t have somebody there to tell you if you are maintaining proper form, so your workout may not be as effective and your risk of injury is increased. But if you have a solo session with a personal trainer, you get their full attention. 

Non-Specific Workouts 

Exercise classes take a one size fits all approach to fitness, which is good in one sense because it means anybody can get involved. However, it does mean that the exercises are not specific to your needs. So, if you are trying to work on certain areas of the body and you have very specific fitness goals, exercise classes may not be the best way to reach those goals. 

Overall, group workouts are incredibly effective because they boost your motivation and make you work harder. However, if you are working towards very specific fitness goals, you may be better off working out on your own.
