It’s a new month and a new year and that means it’s time for another can’t-miss monthly challenge.
This month is a dietary challenge that not only can help you make your diet healthier but also save your some serious $$$.
When it comes to a healthy diet there are three variables that we can manipulate.
– What we eat.
– How much we eat.
– When we eat.
Eating well boils down to having iron-clad control over these three things. If you don’t control what, when and how much you have available to eat then you’re not in control of your food. Your food is in control of you.
The key to mastering all three is to prepare as much of your own food as possible.
I know, it sounds too simple. When clients ask me for ways to improve their diet I don’t go into macronutrient content, calorie counting or special formulas. I always tell them to start preparing as much food as possible. That alone can have a massive impact on all three of the dietary aspects.
Think about it this way; if you head to work today with the intention to have lunch at the local sandwich shop you have far less control over your diet.
-Your food selection is limited to what is on that menu.
-You’re portion sizes are selected by the sandwich shop.
– You can only eat when you can get the opportunity to get to the sandwich shop.
Of course you have some control over these three things for example requesting no cheese on the sandwich or only eating half of the sandwich. But these things take considerably more effort on your part.
Contrast this with if you bring a bad lunch. You are much more in control of what you pack, how much you pack and since you have it on hand, you can snack on it when you want throughout the day.
Having your own prepared foods on hand is the simplest and cheapest way to rein in control of the three aspects of your diet while removing temptation and reducing stress.
I know making and preparing your own food can be a little intimidating. It just seems easier and more convenient to stop by the burger joint than to make your own hamburger. In the next post I’ll cover some D.I.Y food ideas that will make it much easier to prepare your own meals rather than head to the local cafeteria.
