It seems like every year some company comes out with a pill or supplement to help you control your appetite.
Appetite suppression does seem to have it’s merits for weight loss, although it’s effect is probably overrated. After all, most of the luxury calories that lead to weight gain aren’t consumed due to hunger anyway. No one ever ordered desert or chugged a six pack of beer because they were hungry.
Still, the notion of lowering hunger can make it easier to eat less in the first place, so it may be worth looking into. You sure as hell don’t need anything you sprinkle on you on food or any crappy over priced pills. Instead the following are far more effective appetite suppression techniques which include loads of terrific side effects.
#1- Move!
When you’re on the move your body and mind are more concerned with shuffling your attention and energy into energy burning mode rather than energy consumption mode.
You don’t have to be exercising really hard either. Just cleaning house or taking the dog for a walk will do wonders. I even notice a drop in my own appetite when I throw darts in my living room.
#2- Laugh and have fun
Have you ever been having fun at a restaurant with friends and felt like you were interrupted when the food arrived?
When you’re enjoying yourself and having fun your mind is flooded with many of the feel-good chemicals you would normally turn to food for.
#3- Get lost in a story
When the last Harry Potter book came out I became a hermit for 3 days while I did nothing but read, sleep and shower. My mind was so lost in the story I would hardly eat unless my friends made something for me.
You can also get lost in the story of a good movie or even youtube videos. The more your mind is captivated by a story the less food will be a temptation.
#4- Sleep
Appetite is regulated by a delicate balance of many chemicals in your brain and nothing keeps them all balanced like a good night’s sleep.
You’ll notice that all of these strategies are closely tied to improving your energy level. If losing weight is your goal then your personal energy level should be your #1 priority. Nothing drops your appetite like having a lot of energy. As a bonus you also burn much more energy through movement and you also feel great.
