It doesn’t matter how great the latest diet is or what the science says that supports it. No diet or eating method can create continuous long term weight loss.
It also doesn’t matter if you still have weight to lose. Your ability to shed fat and pounds is always limited. From the second you starts on a new diet, the clock is ticking down until the moment it will no longer help you shed weight.
The reason for this is simple. There is absolutely no such thing as a diet that directly causes weight loss. The very idea of an eating style causing you to shed fat is a concept we humans completely made up. There is absolutely nothing in the laws of Nature or physics that have a particular eating style directly causing a steady and constant drop in weight. We may think that eating a certain way tells our body to be lean and skinny but it’s a figment of our imagination.
Mother Nature never had any intention in creating a link between your diet and the amount of fat on your body nor does she have any design for weight gain either. Nature’s single goal is to keep you in a state of homeostasis. That’s her #1 goal and in fact that’s her only goal. Mother Nature doesn’t understand the instructions to “get lean” or to “tone up.” All she ever hears is “hey find a state of homeostasis under these conditions.”
Every diet accomplishes one thing and one thing only, which is to train and condition your body to reach a state of homeostasis with those particular eating habits. Any weight loss and any other physical changes that happen during a diet are simply done to get back to homeostasis. So eating low carb doesn’t tell your body to be lean or have 6-pack abs. It tells your body to achieve a state of homeostasis on a low carb diet. Cutting out junk food doesn’t tell your fat cells to “erupt” like it says in the magazines. It just trains your body to get back to homeostasis without the junk food.
Keep in mind homeostasis is a state of balance between an organism (you) and it’s environment (which is the food, exercise and every other habit you engage in.) A state of homeostasis means you’re in balance and in a stable situation which ensures your survival. That’s why it’s the #1 priority for Mother Nature. She cares a whole lot more about your chances of survival than you do about the 10 pounds you put on over the holidays. As far as she’s concerned her only job is to help keep you alive, not get you ready for swimsuit season. So when you cut out processed foods and that daily latte’ you may be thinking “I want to lose weight.” However, Mother Nature just rolls up her sleeves and says “okay I guess I’ve got to get you back to a state of balance now that you’re missing these foods in your environment.
Of course a state of balance is great for survival, but it’s also the very worst state for anyone looking to change anything about their body. A body in balance is a body that stays the same. If it’s fat it stays fat. If it’s lean it stays lean. Balance (aka homeostasis) prevents change. So in a backwards way every diet and weight loss strategy we come up with is actually a conditioning plan for being able to endure that diet or weight loss habit without “suffering” from weight loss.
This is why a super strict diet plan can result in rebound weight gain. The restriction is a stressful situation for both mind and body, but the return to homeostasis means the stress on at least your body is back to normal levels. However, the stress on your mind is now creating an unbalanced state but your body is back in a balance. When the stress on the mind makes you “crack” and you give up the diet your mind returns to a balanced state but your body is once again thrown out of balance through a caloric surplus. The result is that the eating style you had before you started the weight loss diet is now an excessive eating plan and your body isn’t set up to handle it any more. Therefor, you gain weight, feel sick, lose energy and a host of other ills due to the fact that you’re no longer conditioned to eat that way.
This is why calorie hacking can be such an effective long term weight loss and weight management solution. It uses the natural law of homeostasis to your benefit rather than your detriment. Instead of fighting it, you join forces with Mother Nature and put her power to work for you.
Don’t fight the law of homeostasis. Use it and wield it well. If the law of homeostasis can create, maintain and destroy entire galaxies imagine what it can do for your body if you fight against it.
Now imagine what can happen if you stop fighting it and use it for your benefit.
