“Careful, you don’t want your body to get used to what you’re doing.”
It’s an understandable belief; that if your body gets used to the workout or exercise you’re doing, then you’ll stop making progress. Some experts even claim you’ll lose results because the workout won’t be as hard on your body, and you’ll regress.
But the fact is, you don’t need to worry about having your body get used to your workout or the exercises you do. You actually WANT your body to get used to what you’re doing as much as possible and as quickly as possible.
The reason is simple, you can’t make progress until you become more comfortable with the exercises you’re doing. You can’t get stronger until you become more comfortable lifting with the resistance you’re currently working with. You won’t improve your performance until you can practice your current skills more easily.
Just think of any other endevor you’ve engaged inthroughout your life. you couldn’t learn Algebra until you were comfortable with basic arithmetic. You couldn’t read until you were comfortable with the alphabet. You couldn’t even run until you were used to walking.
Yes, change and variety are very effective tools in your physical training toolbox. Sometimes you do need to change things up, mostly for the sake of covering more ground in your training. It’s hard always to emphasize all physical qualities, so focusing on building strength or endurance with a periodized approach makes sense.
But that’s very different from randomly changing your workout in a misguided effort to keep your body in an unbalanced state of shock. So don’t worry about getting used to an exercise or workout plan. It’s one thing that can certainly increase your chances of success that lasts.
